Considering Hosted VoIP Communications?

Ready for Hosted VoIP? Businesses require an enterprise-class, network infrastructure to ensure high quality audio. Review these network infrastructure recommendations to ensure you are ready for Hosted VoIP because, the call must always go through.

Review the Network Infrastructure

What is required within your network infrastructure to ensure high quality calls:

h

Firewall

The firewall protects your network from malicious Internet traffic. To facilitate VoIP communications your firewall should allow your VoIP handsets to access HTTP, HTTPS, and UDP traffic on your network.

Router

The router manages traffic across your network and facilitates communications to VoIP handsets. Your VoIP handsets are network devices which require an enterprise class router with a high speed or broadband Internet connection.

Switching

The Ethernet switch provides end user device connectivity throughout the network. Ethernet switching capable of QoS, VLAN and PoE is recommended when connecting your VoIP handsets to ensure high quality calls.

h

Traffic Shaping

Traffic shaping allows IT Managers to proactively review how much bandwidth is available to each application or service. Adding traffic shaping will allow you to ensure high quality calls.

Cabling and Wiring

Cabling and wiring is often overlooked. However, it is the backbone of every connection within your infrastructure and is critical to ensuring high quality audio. This infrastructure needs to be compliant to modern standards and provide sufficient connectivity to where you wish to provide VoIP handset connectivity.

Internet Connectivity

What one needs from the Internet connection to ensure high quality calls:

Internet Service Provider

Each high-quality VoIP call requires a high speed or broadband Internet connection to make or receive calls. Your Internet Service Provider may throttle the amount of bandwidth based upon the service type. Contact your Internet Service Provider for information about your existing Internet connection.

Bandwidth

Each high-quality VoIP call requires approximately 100kbps of Internet bandwidth. For example; with a standard T1 connection (1.5 Mbs.), one makes up to 15 concurrent calls at any given time. In many cases both the computers and VoIP handsets share bandwidth, resulting in a reduced amount of concurrent calls that are possible on the network.

Dedicated Internet Connection

Businesses can elect to provide dedicated Internet service to facilitate VoIP communications. With a dedicated Internet service one can ensure the available bandwidth required for the environment to consistently provide high quality calls.

Connectivity Quality

What one needs from the Internet connection to ensure high quality calls:

Jitter

Jitter is one of the most frequent problems in VoIP communications. High levels of jitter can result in bad call quality and long delays. Jitter occurs when latency jumps or spikes regularly beyond 20ms.

Latency

Latency is the time between the moment a voice packet is transmitted and the moment it reaches its destination. Latency leads to delay and echo and is often the result of slow network links. Latency between your VoIP handset and our data centers should be less that 100ms; anything above may result in low quality calls.

Packet Loss

Packet Loss can occur for a variety of reasons including link failure, high levels of congestion that lead to buffer overflow in routers, Random Early Detection (RED), Ethernet problems, and the occasional misrouted packet. Packet loss greater than 1% may result in low quality calls or dropped calls.

Considering Hosted VoIP Communications?

Ready for Hosted VoIP? Businesses require an enterprise-class, network infrastructure to ensure high quality audio. Review these network infrastructure recommendations to ensure you are ready for Hosted VoIP because, the call must always go through.

Other Considerations

Often overlooked, these non-technology considerations can impact a successful Hosted VoIP implementation.

h

Handset Selection

Encore CloudVoice provides compatibility with many of the leading VoIP handset manufactures; but features may vary dependent upon hardware. To ensure full feature availability, choose from the Encore CloudVoice recommended VoIP handsets.

Handset Deployment

You have selected a VoIP handset and are ready to provide service. Consider what may be required for the physical deployment of the VoIP handsets… Encore Technology Group provides handset deployment.

End User Training

The primary source of frustration related to a successful VoIP project is the lack of end user training. If the end user does not understand the basic features, enterprise communication fails. With appropriate end user training you users will be empowered to communicate with voice.

h

Handset Location

Where will these handsets go? Of course they are distributed to the end-user, but what limitations does their environment present; connectivity, power or placement and the associated distance to each?

Managing Change

Implementing a new VoIP communications system is no small task. End users of every category may find objection and resist. Overcome objection with prescriptive internal marketing focused on the features and benefits of their voice communications.

Service and Support

No matter the investment, entering VoIP communications alone often leads to failed VoIP implementations. Do not go alone… go with a leader in VoIP communications, Encore Technology Group. With administrative support provided 24×7 by a recognized leader in Unified Communications, rest assured you will observe the high quality calls you expect for each user of your system.

Handset Warranty

What happens when a VoIP handset fails? VoIP handsets are devices on the network and cannot only provide functionality they can cause detriment to your network infrastructure. VoIP handset warranties provide piece of mind when you need to replace these devices.

Administrative Training

Every voice service implementation requires administrative management. While VoIP reduces the burden placed on the management of moves, adds and changes, local decisions and requirements for VoIP services requires administrative oversight; with administrative training local decisions and requirements can be applied.

And There Is More...

mplementing a successful VoIP project can be overwhelming. Turn to a leader in Unified Communications to review your specific requirements… contact Encore Cloud Services and our professionals to assist you.
